Enhancing research to combat climate disinformation

This page provides access to a wealth of data and insights curated to enhance understanding and effectively combat climate-related disinformation. We collect, analyze, and share data on climate misinformation trends, fact-checked narratives, and regional disinformation campaigns.

The EuroClimateCheck platform is specifically designed to empower researchers by offering reliable and comprehensive data on climate-related misinformation. Our datasets support academic and investigative efforts to understand disinformation dynamics, their impact on public perception, and effective countermeasures. Insights into recurring themes, regional variations, and the dissemination patterns of false narratives provide a robust foundation for analyzing misinformation trends and developing evidence-based strategies to address them.

Professionals in media literacy can analyze ECC data to pinpoint prevalent themes and identify gaps within specific countries.

Case study: Data in action

In the past year, we launched Elections24Check, whose data schema served as a blueprint for the EuroClimateCheck database model. Researchers successfully utilized over 3,000 articles to study misinformation trends and their impacts.

“Digital Platforms’ Responses to Disinformation in the Spanish 2023 General Election”

The report “Digital Platforms’ Responses to Disinformation in the Spanish 2023 General Election” by Maldita.es analyzes how six major online platforms addressed viral disinformation during Spain’s July 2023 general election. It highlights that 80.7% of top-performing false posts identified by Maldita.es remained unaddressed, underscoring the need for improved platform responses to disinformation during elections.

This analysis aligns with the objectives of Elections24Check, a project that monitored and documented disinformation trends during the 2024 European elections. The data collected by Elections24Check serves as a valuable resource for researchers studying the effectiveness of platform interventions and the spread of false narratives during electoral processes. By providing comprehensive datasets and analyses, Elections24Check contributes to understanding and mitigating the impact of disinformation on democratic processes.

Unveiling Disinformation Narratives with AI

The study “Unveiling Disinformation Narratives with AI” highlights the role of Elections24Check as a foundational repository in analyzing climate disinformation narratives related to European farmers’ protests. By leveraging its extensive database of verified claims from over 40 European fact-checking organizations, Elections24Check facilitated collaborative efforts between journalists and computer scientists, enabling both manual and automated narrative extraction. This integrated approach provided deeper insights into recurring disinformation themes and demonstrated the effectiveness of combining AI-driven analysis with human expertise.

Researcher access explicitly prohibits using EuroClimateCheck data for commercial purposes, training custom language models (LLMs), or pretraining existing ones.
